Baltic Sea Region Smart-Up Innovation Camp Brandenburg 2018

Dialoque between Science and Society

November 28-30, 2018, Potsdam-Golm Science Park, Germany

The relations between science and society have been transforming greatly under the pressure of serious societal challenges. For example, the urgency to stop climate change has revealed that many solutions fall beyond mere science and technology factors, but rather they depend on how well scientific reasonings and technological solutions are communicated, understood, accepted and enacted on societal level (Krishna 2013). Active dialogue, inclusive innovation, and blending of local knowledge systems are needed to create the necessary momentum for action. How to achieve such goals with institutional means on regional level?

Brandenburg Innovation Camp tackles the topic of dialogue between science and society, and how can science parks promote increased interaction between businesses, civic society organizations and local community for addressing societal needs and promoting regional development.

Challenge 1: How to better integrate Science Park/Innovation Hub activities with local community and societal needs?

Challenge 2: How to develop a science park into internationally attractive science and innovation location / center?

Challenge 3: How promote dialogue and interaction between science and society? How to enable evidence-informed policy and decision- making?

SWOT workshop for Smart-Up BSR Partners on 28 November 2018

The foresight thinking is part of RIS3 policy. Helsinki-Uusimaa Region in partnership with consultancies developed alternative scenarios of the future based on current grand societal trends and societal challenges. In the scenario work, a number of uncertainties have been identified, and the scenarios have been built on alternative cases and combinations of these. The idea is not to predict the most probable future, but to develop strategic thinking, future visions and interaction between actors in the region. Alternative scenarios of the future are available below:

Alternative Scenarios of the Future

Using alternative scenarios of the future, partner regions organized stakeholder workshops where they devised strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks for their own region for each future scenario. The aim of the exercise is to map out which strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks come up repeatedly, no matter which scenario is being used. These repeating elements are key for the development of the region in the future.
